BIO, the 3-year old boutique located in the quaint downtown neighborhood of NoLIta in New York City, is a shopping haven for the professional woman with a modern, fashion-forward edge. Offering career clothes for young women who want to look hip as well as professional, BIO features everything from suits to shoes, spotlighting some of the world’s most creative up and coming designers, selected for their attention to design, quality and craftsmanship. And if you haven’t heard of some of the designers at the store, every item sold at BIO features a hangtag with an introduction to the designer who created it.
So what’s the bio on the woman behind BIO? An Vu has had an inspirational career path. Vu quit her corporate career in pharmaceuticals in December 2003 to follow her passion and open a clothing store. Although she has no professional fashion experience, with her sister, doctor-turned shoe designer Taryn Rose advising her, Vu learned the ropes by doing. Her own tastes and experiences have guided her in creating BIO.
BIO’s consumer is the girl in the office who everyone looks to for her unique sense of style. Among the list of prestigious designers for S/S 2007 she’ll be able to choose from are: 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent, Castle Starr, Tom K. Nguyen, Alara, Casch Copenhagen, Alvin Valley, Chan Luu, Hiroko Suzuki, jeans by Kasil and True Brit, and shoes from the new Taryn by Taryn Rose line.
Designers often work anonymously behind a larger brand name, so while you may not have heard of many of the young designers featured at BIO, you may already own some of their designs without even knowing it. BIO’s owner An Vu is interested in introducing the individual behind the clothing she sells, and educating the customer about the designer’s aesthetic. The biography hangtags are there to promote the person behind the brand name, and forge a personal connection between consumer and creator. A visit to BIO is more than just a shopping spree, it’s an experience that sparks interest, promotes investigation and facilitates new, informed discovery.
The 1700 square foot store was created for a new kind of shopper -- today’s upwardly mobile career woman who puts time and energy into creating a professional image that is both youthful and directional.
